Unsupervised students rumble at Skyline HS in Dallas

DALLAS — The Dallas school district may be closed on Friday, but more than 150,000 students didn't get the day off after snow began falling Thursday morning.

While students were obligated to attend class, News 8 has learned that not all staff members showed up.

Without adequate supervision, it didn't take long for chaos to erupt at Skyline High School in front of our cameras.

For nearly 10 minutes, students in the school yard were observed watching, cheering, and encouraging a rolling wave of violence. Brutal blows were exchanged between students — boys battled boys and girls attacked girls.

What started as class-skipping romp in the snow, turned chaotic within an hour.

School security was nowhere in sight.

"You also have to understand that when there are this many kids outside, security can't stop all of them," said DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander.

But News 8 watched for more than an hour without any sign of adult supervision.

After a few minutes, a WFAA-TV crew decided to present the only adult presence on the scene; we were met with threats and flying snowballs.

Some students said there was little point of even coming to school on Thursday; one said teachers were helping them toss snowballs at security officers, who ran away.

One Skyline student was injured so badly he was transported to a local hospital.

"Snowball fights are sometimes fun and then sometimes they escalate out of control, and that's what happened in this case," Dahlander said.

DISD officials are standing by their decision not to cancel school Thursday, saying the roads were fine at 6 a.m., when a decision would need to be made.

But the snow was bad enough that 50 staff members at Skyline High School chose to stay at home.

"We're concerned that several staff members didn't show up today, which obviously was part of the catalyst for this taking place," Dahlander said. "There wasn't enough supervision for those students."

While DISD students and teachers who did come to school were required to stay all day, News 8 has learned that central administrative staffers got to go home an hour early.

Separately, Dallas ISD confirms Woodrow Wilson High School went into lock-down after students started a snowball fight between classes - not a fist fight.

Administrators responded immediately, Dahlander said, and dozens of students involved were taken into the auditorium and the school was put under a 30-minute lockdown. Wilson slowly returned to its normal classroom schedule, Dahlander added.

My opinion on the story

I can't believe that happened in our school. Well I can believe it happened at our school and I sorta knew that was going to happen that day. It wasn't cool at all what they did becuz they had to send my friend to the hospital becuz he had gotten a concussion and lost memory for a while nd my other friend got sent home and they also broke my neighbors nose so now she hasn't gone to school ever since. I also think she or my friend are going to sue the school but I dont think they will win. Good thing I wasn't there I was inside eating three trays of food being a fatass.

Michael Phelps hits Vancouver, says London will be final Olympics

The most decorated athlete in Olympic history began a five-day trip to Vancouver by making a little news of his own. Michael Phelps told reporters that the 2012 London Olympics will be his last and that he won't attempt to repeat his eight-gold-medal performance in two years.

"I told myself I will not swim over the age of 30, and I will not swim over the age of 30," he said.

Phelps will be 27 at the London Olympics. He has won 14 gold medals in his career, five more than any other athlete. Though he didn't specifically say how many events he'd do in London, five or six would be the most likely (three relays plus two or three individual events).

Usually you can take athlete promises with a grain of salt — BRETT FAVRE — but Phelps strikes me as the kind of guy who will stay retired. Swimming is a sport for the young and a 31-year-old competing in the Olympics against 19-year-olds doesn't sound like an enviable task, even for the greatest in the history of the sport. Yet, Phelps didn't say he was retiring immediately after London. Could he stick around long enough to lure him back into the pool in 2016?

If anything, I'd bet more on Phelps coming back in 2020 than in 2016. Imagine that story: Out of the pool for eight years, the greatest Olympic champion returns for one event. That's the stuff from which lucrative endorsement deals are made.

My opinion on the story

What shocking news huh. I thought Michael Phelps was young like around his 20's but no he's already old. but why would he just give up like that he should be going for more and win more medals and set a higher record than his own. But I think what they say about him coming back to maybe the 2020 Olympics is true and that would be awesome and that would win alot of money for him and the people who make the Olympics. I also wonder what if someone beats his record on the next Olympics while he is competing that would be a shame for him and a very glorious day for the other person.

My opinion on the story

I think that what Bob Moore did was something that no other man would have done. Other people would have sold their company or passed it on like he said but he did something no other person had done was give his company to his workers. The only thing that I wonder is how is he going to get money now does he still sit behind the desk or is he at home now. But I'm pretty sure he saved money or something to support him while he lives.

4th six weeks personal narritive

Well this six weeks starts out by me worrying what I'm going to get on my report card. I think everyone worries about that the first week. this time I dont know what I'm going to get because I feel like I didn't try last six weeks like I was suppose too. But thats what I get for not trying my hardest.(a couple of weeks later) Well I got my report card and I passed all my class better than I expected so I guess I did try last six weeks. It's Febraury the month of love at least thats what they say but there is one thing I know about February. My birthday!!!!! My birthday this year was awesome because my girlfriend bought me a Superman wallet that was really awesome best thing in the world. Besides my birthday school hasnt been going to good im not trying this six weeks for some reason im not feeling it this time. I'm sure that im going to fail biology and algebra 2 I haven't done no work at all not one homework and maybe two or three worksheets from class. The only thing I do in those classes is sleep and talk but mostly sleep. But besides my failing classes lets talk about my good classes like ROTC im doing very good in that class I got promoted to a squad leader which is a position i wanted since last year. It was so cool when I got the position but I was very nervous because now I'm in charge of six cadets and I have to look good in front of them by doing everything right and studying all of my 22 questions. I'm also doing better in Drill Team I might get to compete in a competition this year. I'm also thinking of joining cross country next year and also honor guard but I can't do both so I'm going to hav to choose one. The most beautiful thing happened today it snowed six inches today but I'm also very dissapointed on what happened in school why would people start fighting outside and ruin a very good day and now because of those people who made all that mess we all have to suffer. Mr.Wright was mad, furiated with all those students who caused all that trouble it even came out on the news and now someones head has to be chopped off to pay for what happened on that day. Mr.Wright is not going to get blamed for this because he is not going to allow it he is going to find all those people who made that mess. On the day before Valentines day I went out with my girlfriend to Northpark mall at ten in the morning to watch the movies Dear John and Valentines day and after that go eat somewhere. That day was pretty awesome she was really happy that she got to see the movie Dear John she had been wanting to go see that movie but she thought she wasn't going to be able to see it. I still have the problem with biology and algebra 2 now I'm a 100% sure i failed those classes but not next six weeks. Next six weeks I'm going to pass all my classes with a 85 and above. I'm sure of that and I'm prepared for my TAKS test except for biology and I'm pretty sure I can pass algebra 2. All I have to do is study and I can pass the test.

Travis Pastrana makes record leap into the New Year

In Long Beach, Calif., New Year's revelers don’t have a ball that drops. But this year they did have action sports icon Travis Pastrana flying his rally car across Rainbow Harbor. Pastrana was the center attraction at this year’s Red Bull New Year No Limits event. He celebrated the arrival of 2010 by successfully shattering the old car-jumping record of 171 feet after launching his tiny Red Bull sedan off the Pine Street Pier going 90 mph. Pastrana officially flew his car 269 feet over the water before landing hard on a floating barge and skidding into a barricade that prevented him from going into the drink. The X-Games legend (9 gold medals) made his name in motocross, but Pastrana’s 450 HP Subaru WRX STI rally car has become his vehicle of choice. He’s also become one of the most renowned daredevils. When he was 18 years old he jumped his motorcycle into the Grand Canyon. A few years later he jumped out of a plane without a parachute. After spending months of trial and error in the desert training for this stunt, Pastrana thrilled the crowd by sticking the landing perfectly.

My Summary


Travis Pastrana is one awesome person. I wish I could do that jump 269 feet over water. But I think he is a little to crazy when he jumped the Grand Canyon that was more awesome than this jump. Well at least he accomplished something he beat a world record, well he actually broke alot of records including the double backflip and the Grand canyon jump and jumping out of a airplane without no parachute??? Yea he is one awesome guy who has no limits and represents Redbull or is sponsered by Redbull. What I dont know if he has a family or not, If he does than thats sad for him because he left his family for a new years show and thats not good. But thats his life and his life is awesome I wish I could do all that.

Why Mexicans Fear 2010

Forget 2012. As far as many Mexicans are concerned, the ancient Mayas were being generous: the sky's actually going to fall next year. Why? Because it's 2010, Mexico's bicentennial, and Mexican history has an eerie way of repeating itself. Mexico's 1910 centennial, after all, saw the start of the bloody, decade-long Mexican Revolution, which killed more than a million people. And that cataclysm was precisely a century after the start of Mexico's bloody, decade-long War of Independence in 1810.

You get the picture. As a result, there's been no shortage of talk lately about possible unrest, especially in the form of armed rebel groups, erupting south of the border in 2010. But is there really a basis for concern? None as apparent as the popular grievances that existed in 1809 or 1909. But this is still Mexico; and while Spanish colonizers no longer oppress the country, and dictators like Porfirio Diaz aren't brutalizing campesinos, the country nonetheless is reeling from the worst criminal violence in its history and one of its hardest economic slumps. My Summary

What I think about this prediction about the Mexcians going to a brutal death or war is pretty uncertain. I dont think its going to happen there really isn't any recent news about the Mexican people going through some tough times. Well they always have problems but if you think about it all the gangs for example the Zetas they are a pretty big gang that are even coming to this country that we live in. Maybe the big war or death they are talking about will be from the Zetas or many other gangs. What if they want to go to war with the U.S and maybe start some big controversy that will end up in killing alot of people. But we will never know until 2010 which is going to be in ummm 9 hours. Pretty cool.

3rd six weeks persanol narrative

My third six weeks starts out by me starting the third six weeks. Hahaha I was just playing no really my six weeks starts out good because the following week after the first weeks is Thanksgiving break. The week that we were off was one of the best weeks ever because I got to spend time with my girlfriend almost everyday and she also came over on Thanksgiving day with my family. The next week we went back to school and it was very tiring to get up on that Monday, it felt as if there was no more school left and we didn't have to go back but we did. Everything was okay and things could of been okay but I failed my algebra 2 test when we got back. I failed it because I didn't study during the Thanksgiving break. Things are getting better in school but not that good with my girlfriend but in school they are great my grades improved alot when I got my report card I was shocked to see my grades so good. The class that I was most shocked about was biology I thought I was going to fail that class but no I didn't and it was a good grade too I had gotten a 69 and now the second six weeks I got a 80 so I was happy. So things were going great and at ROTC these Marine recruiters went and told us about all of their things and the scholarship they offered and they aslo mentioned this Marine P.T training they hav every week. So me and my friend went to their training and it was awesome because they made us run 2 miles and did alot of push-ups and sprints and it was just awesome, but it was to weak for me I was expecting a little hardcore stuff from them so I don't think im going back. What I did find interesting was this Navy recruiting station right beside the Marine one but it was closed that day. So I'm going back because I want to be a Navy SEAL. I want to be the best of them all. After a few weeks Christmas break came and it had its good moments and bad. The bad moment was i broke with my girlfriend and got back with her the next day so it wasn't that bad and I got my girlfriend a necklace for Christmas and she loved it very much and on Christmas eve at church I came out on the Christmas play and I was nervous but it came out good. So far everything is good nothing is going bad except for my biology project that I might not do because I dont understand it. But so far that is my 3 six weeks.
